MetroPlan Pedestrian Count: By Amy Bradbury
Several Urban Knights took the opportunity to volunteer with MetroPlan Orlando the second week of January in the organization’s first ever cyclist/pedestrian count study. The effort spanned three counties and is a part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project. Sixteen sites for counting were chosen based on existing and future SunRail station locations. The data collected will help guide design around these key areas to better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians with infrastructure improvements. Participating students were trained by a MetroPlan representative and dedicated two hours of their time to counting pedestrians and cyclists crossing an intersection or mid-block location. Although there was the potential for adverse weather conditions, the volunteers lucked out with a beautiful Orlando day!
